SLJ

Once in a while a very special event takes place in New Zealand. It is a show of beautiful
, bright lights that appear in the sky over the South Island. The lights are called the
‘Aurora Australis’ or ‘Southern Lights.’ They are similar to the ‘Northern Lights’ that are
often seen in places like Northern Canada, Iceland, Sweden, Finland and Denmark.
The southern and northern lights are so stunning that they often leave people, who
are watching them, speechless.
For this activity, you are to write a short acrostic word poem about the beautiful lights
. Hazel has written an acrostic poem about summer to give you an example.
 S - Sun outside,
U - Umbrellas in the sand.
M -  My friends and I, having fun,
M - Making sandcastles,
E - Enjoying ice cream on a hot day,
R - Racing to the beach!
On your blog, use the word ‘LIGHTS’ to write an acrostic poem about the Southern
Lights. Be as creative as you can!
For more information and examples of acrostic poems, check out this poetry website.
The moon night light. The bright gorgeous light.

  1. Hi Tehillah,

You have used some powerful vocabulary in your poem, well done. Can you think of another word beginning in 'R' (so that you don't use ravishing twice?).

Like the example given, you can start a sentence with the letter, not just use one word. It's up to you!

  2. Kia Orana Tehillah,

Cia here from the Summer Learning Journey Ako Hiko team. I have the opportunity today to engage with some of you people here in the Manaiakalani Cluster which is awesome.

You have used some really sophisticated words to describe the lights of Aurora Australis, ka pai. A friendly reminder; this activity asks that you use the word 'Lights' to write your poem. Please edit your post to include an acrostic poem using the word 'Lights'. I will be happy to award you full points for this activity once you have done this. :)

Perhaps next time you could also write about who you'd go with if you were to visit the Southern or Northern Lights. I'd take my whole family with me, so we can have another beautiful memory to add to the banks.

    Who would you go with?

Toe feiloa'i fo'i (see you again),

    Cia.
