Approximately two-thirds of all rivers and one-half of all lakes in New Zealand are
too polluted to swim in, according to a recent article in an online newspaper. One
of the most polluted is the Tarawera River in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand
. Pollution enters the river from a local pulp and paper mill, from local farms and
through the local sewage system. Many other rivers in New Zealand are also
polluted with waste from businesses and farms.
Use Google to help you find two other polluted rivers in New Zealand.

  1. Kia ora Tehillah,

Well done on completing another Summer Learning Journey activity!
You have done a great job on selecting two rivers/streams that are polluted, you have picked one in your own city (North Shore, Auckland) and one in Hawkes bay, Napier.
I didn’t know that the Kaipatiki stream was polluted, have you checked out this article about the Kaipatiki community celebrating their hard work that they’ve put into looking after their environment https://www.stuff.co.nz/auckland/local-news/north-shore-times/85251513/north-shores-kaipatiki-community-celebrates-ecological-health-with-10day-festival
I hope that Tukituki will return back to being a clean river!

Can you think of any ways you can keep your surrounding streams and rivers clean? Looking forward to hearing from you!

    Blog you later!
